Intent – Core Curriculum

At Wellesbourne Primary School, our curriculum is designed to provide all children with the knowledge, skills and values needed to become confident, independent learners and responsible members of society. We believe in delivering an ambitious, inclusive and engaging curriculum that fosters a love of learning while ensuring that every child reaches their full potential.

Reading

We aim to develop a culture of reading for pleasure and purpose, equipping children with the skills to become fluent, confident readers. Through a structured and systematic approach to phonics and comprehension, we ensure that all children can access high-quality texts that inspire curiosity and deepen understanding. We foster a love for literature by exposing children to a broad range of genres, authors and cultures, enabling them to develop critical thinking and a lifelong passion for reading.

Writing

Our writing curriculum empowers children to communicate their ideas clearly, creatively and effectively. We develop pupils’ ability to write for a variety of purposes and audiences, embedding high standards of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Through exposure to high-quality texts, rich vocabulary and engaging writing opportunities, we nurture confident, articulate writers who take pride in their work and understand the power of written expression.

Mathematics

We provide a mastery-based approach to mathematics, ensuring that all children develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Our curriculum promotes a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, encouraging children to apply their knowledge to real-life situations. Through the use of practical resources, visual representations and rich questioning, we support children in becoming resilient and confident mathematicians who embrace challenges with enthusiasm.

Science

Our science curriculum fosters curiosity, exploration and discovery. We encourage children to develop a strong understanding of the world through scientific enquiry, investigation and hands-on experiences. By promoting key scientific skills—such as observing, questioning and hypothesising—we inspire children to think critically and develop a deep-rooted appreciation for science’s role in everyday life and the wider world.

At Wellesbourne Primary School, we are committed to delivering a curriculum that not only meets statutory requirements but also ignites a love for learning, ensuring that every child is well-prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond – ‘Living to learn, Learning to live’.
