Learning
Phonics and Reading
In school we teach daily phonics using Essential Letters and Sounds, in Reception we teach children how to read using fully synthetic phonics scheme. From this children are introduced to Oxford Reading Tree scheme of books, here they get to meet new characters such as Chip, Biff and Kipper, the books are short, fun and interesting to read. As your child moves on into the juniors they will start to read Treetops and Project X books, here they will meet characters such as X-Bot and read about mini missions involving Professor X. At times children can struggle with reading and may need a little more support, for this, we use a scheme called ‘Code X‘ children are placed on the scheme for a short amount of time with extra adult support their progress is monitored and they are placed back on the regular scheme when ready. We also have another intervention, a computer based intervention called ‘Lexia’. Lexia is aimed at struggling readers and is a programme which is undertaken 3 times per week for approximately 20 minutes. Already we are seeing amazing progress being made by the children using the intervention.
Early reading is crucial to your child’s development and achievement in school. Reading at home regularly will support your child and enable them to be a more confident reader. Below we have some useful resources that will help you along with your child’s reading journey.
