At Wellesbourne Primary and Nursery School, handwriting is a vital part of learning. We believe that fluent handwriting supports children’s overall development — from early communication and fine motor control to spelling, composition and self‑confidence as writers. When children do not have to think hard about forming letters, they can focus on what they want to say.

Strong Foundations for Early Writing

High‑quality early writing begins with:

  • Well‑developed fine motor skills
  • Correct letter formation from the start
  • Clear, consistent teaching routines
  • Regular opportunities to practise and apply skills

By teaching handwriting explicitly and systematically, we help children build secure habits that will support them throughout their education.

Our Approach: Letter‑join

To deliver a consistent, structured approach, we use the Letter‑join handwriting programme. Letter‑join is a whole‑school scheme that:

  • Teaches correct letter formation and joins in a clear sequence
  • Uses consistent language and visual prompts across all year groups
  • Supports a smooth transition from print to cursive writing
  • Helps children develop fluency, speed and confidence

Children are taught when and how to join letters correctly, rather than being encouraged to join too early. This aligns with Strong Foundations guidance, ensuring accuracy comes before speed.

Supporting Your Child

By combining the principles of Strong Foundations with the Letter‑join programme, we give children the best possible start in handwriting. This strong foundation supports not only neat presentation, but also success across reading, writing and the wider curriculum.

We value the support of parents and carers and encourage you to practise correct letter formation at home using the same Letter‑join approach your child learns in school.
